Universal Studios Announces Expansion of Biodiesel Use
Central Florida Fleets Recognized for Reducing Emissions with Biodiesel
ORLANDO, Fla.– Florida is a natural paradise for birds, animals and people, with more than 70 million annual visitors and 17 million residents. Many companies and government fleets have turned to biodiesel to help them protect this delicate ecosystem and keep it healthy for future generations. Today, the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) recognized NASA, Florida Power & Light and Universal Studios as leaders in biodiesel use and education. The NBB is currently hosting the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Universal Studios announced today that biodiesel will be used in its resort water taxis as well as the 50-plus ground-based vehicles already running on the B20 blend (20 percent biodiesel/80 percent diesel fuel). The Orlando theme park has adopted biodiesel to lower diesel pollutants, such as particulate matter and carbon monoxide. The smell and black smoke emitted from diesel vehicles will be greatly reduced as Universal Studios pumps B20 into all of its diesel-powered vehicles, including the JAWS® ride boats. The results are an estimated reduction of CO2 emissions by 158 tons per year, and an improved guest experience.
“We care about the environment and we want to do the right thing,” said David Winslow, P.E., Sr. Director Engineering and Environmental Sustainability Technical Services, NBC Universal. “The use of biodiesel reduces our engine exhaust emissions and overall carbon footprint. Our biodiesel fuel program affects what our guests see and experience. All of this makes a positive difference.”
Florida is considered a prominent biodiesel state. At the annual Eye on Biodiesel Awards presentation, held during the conference today, the NBB recognized NASA and Florida Power & Light for their leadership as biodiesel champions. Other high-profile users include Walt Disney World and Orlando International Airport. The state is also home to two biodiesel processing plants. Agri-Source Fuels operates a 30 million gallon capacity plant in Dade City, Fla., and Purada Processing LLC operates an 18 million gallon plant in Lakeland, Fla.
The National Biodiesel Board is the national not-for-profit trade association representing the biodiesel industry as the coordinating body for advocacy, research and development in the United States. The National Biodiesel Conference is taking place at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando through Wed., Feb. 6.
